Gave rise to the nation Israel	his twelve sons became the twelve tribes of Israel (Gen 49:1-28)	appointed his twelve apostles to become the Church, the new Israel (Mt 10:1-4)
Supplanter	took from Esau his birthright by cunning (Gen 25:29-34) and Isaac’s blessing by deception (Gen 27)	rightful King of the Jews over king Herod the Great (an Edomite from the line of Esau) (Mt 2:2-3)
Ladder between heaven and earth	dreamt angels ascending and descending on the ladder (Gen 28:12)	he is the ladder (Jn 1:51), the one mediator between God and man (1 Tim 2:5)
