Baptism the new creation of the flood

1 Peter 3:20-21 when God's patience waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was being prepared, in which a few, that is, eight persons, were brought safely through water. Baptism, which corresponds to this, now saves you, not as a removal of dirt from the body but as an appeal to God for a good conscience, through the resurrection of Jesus Christ.

New Creation of the Flood

Baptism

Water cleanses

washed away the wickedness of man (Gen 6:11-13)

washes away the slavery of sin (Acts 22:16)

Water brings death

wiped out all living things not in Noah's ark (Gen 7:21-23)

brings communion with Jesus's death (Rom 6:3; Col 2:12) and death to sin (Rom 6:1-11)

the dove from Noah's ark over the flood waters (Gen 8:8-12)

of water and the Spirit (Jn 3:5)

Water brings new birth

a new creation:

  • Spirit of God / dove over the waters (Gen 1:2; 8:8-12)

  • Noah is a new Adam, the first man from the flood (Gen 6:17-18; 8:16)

  • God's commandment to be fruitful and multiply (Gen 1:28; 8:17)

being born again in water and the Spirit to enter the kingdom of God (Jn 3:5), becoming a child of God (1 Jn 3:1) and a partaker of his divine nature (2 Pet 1:4)

Salvific

Noah's ark saved eight people from the flood (Gen 8:16)

with faith, saves (Mk 16:16, Tit 3:5 & 1 Pet 3:21)
